Founded in 2007 as a men’s shirting brand, Martine Rose draws its inspiration from the experiential tension between individualism and belonging; exploring the potential of clothing to serve as cultural signifiers.
By exploring both personal and imagined histories, Martine Rose takes icons or motifs from the past and reimagines their use in the present — contexts are subverted, references collide, and the result is what makes each collection feel ‘offbeat’, and yet so ‘in tune’. Volume, proportion, and fabrication are used in an equally dynamic way to blur the lines between the familiar and unconventional; questioning the former functionality or past popularity of certain aesthetics through their re-appropriation today.

Martine Rose is always interested in the relation between fashion and our ordinary realities, and this season we began with the everyday, unthinking tussles we have dressing and undressing; Fighting to get into your own clothes, or trying to get into someone else’s. The clothing accidents involved in urgent sexual encounters or hurried dressing afterwards. Investigating how garments are pulled against the body and their resulting shape or attitude.Our new shrunken silhouette plays with proportion, the torso is reduced into the body but the sleeves, collar and other details retain a correct fit. It’s inspired by the feeling of wedging yourself into something a bit too small and the energy comes from the difference in scale within the garment. There’s a simultaneous constriction and roomy comfort. The story extends across categories starting with a take on clubby mini T shirts and is developed through tailoring and denim to a lightly padded sports jacket -the most extreme version, which creates the illusion it’s too tiny to close and where the deliberately exposed lining zips up to fasten the garment instead.

The latest Martine Rose collection is an homage to characters and characteristics. A familiar version of shapes, signatures and slogans encourage the Martine Rose man—and woman—to pull from a selection of garments that arrive at different outcomes when getting dressed. Here Fall 21 nods to a personal wardrobe notion where the garments should feel as jumbled and diverse as one’s own closet. Remixing the spectrum within varied states of controlled chaos is given full attention. Martine Rose trademarks are spun around to explore ideas rather than a single theme. A perverse, complex impression of sex is explored with a football character in an oversized pale blue jersey and red leather trousers.
