When Sébastien Meyer proposed making glass versions of Coperni’s signature Swipe bags for autumn/winter 2022, brand CEO Arnaud Vaillant’s response was, “Ooh la la!” It was a great idea, he said, but words of doubt – “heavy”, “fragile, “expensive” – clouded his artistic judgement. “It’s the story of my life!” says Meyer, the creative director of the French outfit.
In this particular case, Sébastien won and the bags, which are more like objets than functional receptacles, went viral. “We’re happy because it means that when you have a good idea people respond to it,” says Meyer of the special project crafted in collaboration with the artsy New York brand, Heven. For Vaillant’s part, he’s just pleased the risk paid off.
Not only have major commercial partners bought into the ornate product that can’t really hold anything but looks fabulous, Coperni has had some serious celebrity endorsements. When Kylie Jenner posted a picture of her carrying the brand’s devil-horned glass bag housing two tiny Kylie Cosmetics lip glosses, it “changed everything”. Two weeks prior, Rihanna wore a custom Coperni crop top look during her one woman mission to rip up the maternity wear rulebook. “It was an absolute dream,” shares Vaillant, clearly still on cloud nine. “There were lots of different communities behind Rihanna as she was pregnant, so it was a beautiful situation.
