From photography and sculpting to drawing and creative direction, Korean artist, Cho Giseok, has made a name for himself as a contemporary force in diverse creative fields. Now, a new distinction beckons, with the artist’s clothing and accessories brand, KUSIKOHC, earning him renown as a visionary fashion designer. For such a successful artist, it may seem contradictory that the brand is anchored in the concept of the “right to fail”. Yet, it is such contradictions – with even the brand name alluding to being a mirror reflection of the artist’s name in reverse – that convey his openness to reinvention and belief that taking risks and trying, even if one fails, has the power to effect change. As such, Giseok is ever seeking inspiration, continually pushing forward to think and design beyond the status quo.
the gap between fantasy and reality
The designer's collection for Autumn/Winter 2023 takes up the theme of the gap between fantasy and reality, and the different ways in which we choose to bridge it. As such, the collection strikes a balance between experimental design and wearable garments, with an oversized silhouette as the focus. The brand's signature technique of applying 3D fabric motifs makes an appearance both literally and in printed and embroidered variations, while denim becomes paper-like in texture after a process of washing, dyeing and pleating. Black, white, earth, red, yellow and blue tones make up the minimal palette that stays true to the brand's DNA.
