Struggle is a fundamental reality of the human condition. It is, therefore, an inevitable feature of anything that human beings do. Granted, that may seem a rather resigned note to open this issue of Tomorrow Paper on. Our intention over the pages that follow, however, is not to wallow in the melancholy that colours current times, but rather to highlight the astounding feats that are born of pushing against challenging circumstances; to demonstrate the awe-inspiring achievements born of resilience.
Pulling this issue together, what quickly became clear was the extent to which resilience is an essential precondition for any meaningful contribution to the fashion industry. It is both an industry in need of reforms and one that is stubborn to welcome them. And yet, in the face of this hostility toward change, a new generation of independent businesses remains resolved to develop and implement new ways of thinking about fashion, the way it operates, and how it reflects the world. Across these pages, we introduce you to a few of these vital minds – the designers reacting against today’s gloom to build a brighter tomorrow.
