GEORGIE’S REVIEW: MARNI SS21

What a beautiful way to look at humanity. At a time when we all feel so disparate and disconnected, Marni presented an SS21 immersive stream that captured their collection through the eyes, lens and lifestyles of creatives all over the world.
Streamed from the likes of London, New York and Shanghai a group of diverse individuals went about their day, getting groceries, painting, playing music, chatting with friends, sitting on a street-corner. In typical Francesco Rizzo fashion, it was done in a slightly psychedelic lens, with self-expression being the key theme.
Primary colours popped out of the screen, as the collection continued as if straight from AW20. Painted leathers, calico raw-edge dresses, striped knits and full skirts all felt tactile and joyous. These high-fashion pieces came alive within the mundane and every day. In particular, a visit to the corner store saw a stiff skirt and jacket come alive as the surveillance camera picked up the hand-painted scrawlings and bright hues.
That kind of visceral human interaction was voyeuristic and magnetic. While it may not be my favourite collection of Rizzo’s, this was a wonderful way to use fashion in reaction to the times we’re in.
