GEORGIE’S REVIEW: MAISON MARGIELA SS21

Part two of the Maison Margiela S.W.A.L.K film series launched earlier today to close fashion week and it was totally spectacular. The second of the behind-the-scenes meets fashion film meets documentary, allowed us voyeuristic insight into John Galliano's plans for the season.
We’re used to hearing Galliano discuss his collection’s inspirations via the Maison Margiela podcast but there’s something magnetic about watching him animate as he speaks about the Argentinian tango, the Recicla pieces or Singin’ In The Rain as inspiration. What followed was a beautiful connection between the artisanal and the ready-to-wear, as sheer organzas and muslin transformed into incredible suiting, decadent dresses trimmed with feather and bias-cut shirting and silks that worked for either gender.
The deep blood reds of the delicate headpieces were carried through into sheer layered pieces that came alive in both wedding scene and static image. Netting, shirting, satins, drapery it was all spell-bindingly breathtaking. It was romantic, it was gothic, it was both new and traditional, all packaged and presented in a film that you will want to watch again and again. What a fantastic way to close a season that has been somewhat up and down, with a collection and presentation format that re-connects you with the intimacy of fashion.
